LITURGICAL EVENINGS IN BORIS HRISTOV’S HOUSE

On the 25th and 26th of April 2017, at 7 p.m., in the cozy atmosphere of the Musical centre “Boris Hristov”, concerts of “Bulgarian collegium HOSANNA” will take place.
AN EVENT FIRST OF ITS KIND – because of the unusual repertoire, the concert will provoke unusual feelings in the audience.
For two consecutive evenings, the vocal quintet will perform five newly written liturgies in Italian, French, German, English, and liturgical Greek by the composer Georgi Popov. The music is based on St. John Chrysostom’s liturgical text.
The decision of writing the liturgies was reached after a number of meeting between us and colleagues-conductors from Western Europe and USA. They shared that The Divine Liturgy’s has been translated in the European languages, however, the translations have been “fixed” according to the Russian and Greek chanting.
This “fixing” in a way takes away the liturgical intonations from those intonations that live among the respective nations. Thus, the Orthodox Christians, living in the West (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren of emigrants, people from mixed marriages or locals who convert to Orthodoxy) have to dive into intonational atmosphere that is a lot different than that of their countrymen.
So as to overcome these grand obstacles, the composer Georgi Popov wrote five Orthodox Divine Liturgies in these five European languages, in which the intonations are typical for those nations in whose languages were written and at the same time he tried to retain the Orthodox spirit in them, so different from the Slavic and Greek chants. This is not an easy task to accomplish and whether its solution would be successful or not would be evident after the Judge rules after time.
These five liturgies are the formation of the liturgical celebrations in Turin, initiated by us, called “Days of Saints Cyril and Methodius” which will be held with the blessing of archimandrite Ambrose (Kassinasko), the primate of “Saint Maximus of Turin”, in the week from 17th to 24th May 2017.
We invite most wholeheartedly all of you who are interested in the Orthodox music to attend both concerts.
Entrance with tickets – 5 leva.
